Big Sur is one of the most breathtaking places to get married along California’s rugged coast. As a wedding and elopement photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing love stories in some of the most stunning venues this region has to offer. From cliffside ceremonies overlooking the Pacific to intimate redwood groves, Big Sur offers a magical backdrop for couples looking to tie the knot in nature’s beauty. In this post, I’ll be sharing some of my favorite venues in the area that are perfect for your unforgettable day.
Wind & Sea Big Sur is a breathtaking private estate nestled high on the cliffs of Big Sur, offering an unmatched view of the rugged California coastline. The venue’s aesthetic blends effortlessly with the natural surroundings, creating a luxurious yet earthy vibe. Picture stunning wood architecture, expansive decks, and floor-to-ceiling windows that let the light pour in, all while the sound of the crashing waves provides a serene backdrop. It’s the kind of place where you feel completely immersed in nature while still enjoying the comfort of a well-designed space.
This venue is ideal for intimate weddings and elopements, with its capacity comfortably accommodating up to 70 guests. Couples have a beautiful ceremony site option: an ocean-view bluff-top spot that gives you the feeling of being on the edge of the world. For receptions, the estate offers space for a relaxed outdoor dining experience on the lawn, allowing guests to enjoy the beauty of Big Sur from every angle.

The Hyatt Carmel Highlands can accommodate a lot of guests, but the terrace ceremony site is pretty limited, so I do recommending keeping your guest count more intimate if you decide on this venue! Those it can be a versatile choice for both intimate gatherings and grand celebrations. Inside, the elegantly appointed event spaces offer a sophisticated setting with floor-to-ceiling windows that capture the surrounding beauty.
The property also boasts luxurious accommodations, allowing the couple and their guests to stay in style and fully enjoy the serene coastal environment. With its combination of stunning views, refined elegance, and top-notch service, the Hyatt Carmel Highlands is an exceptional choice for a memorable and breathtaking wedding celebration.
The Barns at Cooper Molera is a picturesque venue located in downtown Monterey, offering a blend of rustic charm and historic elegance. Set within the historic Cooper Molera Adobe complex, this venue features beautifully restored barns that combine classic architecture with modern amenities. The barns are surrounded by lush gardens and open fields, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere.
The venue can host up to two hundred guests, making it ideal for both intimate gatherings and larger celebrations. Couples can choose from various settings for their ceremony, including the spacious lawn or the barn itself, which provides a unique and cozy backdrop. The reception area offers ample space for dining and dancing, with a rustic yet refined ambiance that reflects the venue’s historical character.
With its combination of historical significance, natural beauty, and versatile spaces, it’s a wonderful choice for couples seeking a memorable and elegant setting for their wedding day.
The Big Sur River Inn offers a charming and serene setting for weddings and elopements, nestled along the picturesque Big Sur River. This historic venue exudes a rustic, homey vibe that’s perfect for couples seeking a relaxed and intimate atmosphere. With its beautiful riverfront location and lush, forested surroundings, it provides a unique blend of natural beauty and quaint elegance.
The venue can accommodate up to 200 guests, making it suitable for both small gatherings and more large celebrations. 1. Consider Your Guest List Size: Big Sur offers a range of venues from intimate settings to larger spaces. Ensure the venue you choose can comfortably accommodate your guest list.
2. Think About Accessibility: Check the venue’s accessibility for all your guests. Big Sur’s rugged terrain might be challenging for some, so make sure your venue is accessible or has accommodations for guests with mobility issues.
3. Check for Weather Conditions: Big Sur’s weather can be unpredictable. Choose a venue that offers flexibility when it comes to road closures or storms.
4. Evaluate the Venue’s Amenities: Look for venues that offer essential amenities such as catering services, parking, and restroom facilities. Some venues also provide on-site accommodations, which can be a big plus.
5. Think About the View and Photography Opportunities: Big Sur is known for its stunning landscapes. Choose a venue that provides the backdrops you want for your photos and takes advantage of the natural scenery.

7. Plan for Logistics: Consider how your guests will get to and from the venue, especially if it’s in a remote location or a venue with limited parking. Check for nearby accommodations and transportation options.
8. Visit the Venue in Person: If possible, visit the venue before making a decision. This will give you a better sense of the space, the layout, and how it aligns with your vision for the wedding.
9. Consult with Your Photographer: Talk to your photographer about the venue’s lighting and layout to ensure it fits with your vision and provides good opportunities for capturing your special moments.
